Watson following a trailWatson reporting.

I am, officially, your favourite member of The Lost Book team! I beat Kyle (grrrr) into second place, and my Aileen was third. (I can’t believe you lot rate Kyle above Aileen. You’ve got some explaining to do!)

I’ve added this as the last fact in my list of facts. I like to keep lists and this one records all the decisions taken by vote during our Lost Book adventure. There are 52. That’s a lot of decision-making!

I need a new list! Maybe Invisible Inc. has one I can keep?

Fun times! The last recording session with our voice actors Cora Bissett and Sean Biggerstaff was on Sunday. For once, Cora didn’t have to do a million mad voices – she was simply (and beautifully) Aileen Adler.

Sean, on the other paw, had the challenge of putting a voice to the thoughts of Watson. “Urbane gentleman spy” was an option for a while… and led inevitably to “Bond, Sean Bond” and much hilarity. The final voice is neither of those, but is a glorious big voice for a small but important dog. You’ll have to wait until Friday to hear it.

L-R: Helen Jackson, Adam Brewster, Cora Bissett, Sean Biggerstaff and Stephen Gilmour

At lunch afterwards it emerged that Sean is a great fan of Pimms, so we celebrated with a jug or two of Pimms and lemonade. It’s appropriate, then, that the popular vote has decided that Pimms is the drink of choice for Aileen and Kyle (thanks Kiwi for the suggestion, and thanks DJ for letting us know the Sheep Heid Inn can “rustle up a fantastic classic Pimms No 1″.)

We also have a decision for a book to feature in the last episode – it will then be BookCrossed in the Sheep Heid, so if you’re in Duddingston this coming weekend you might want to pop in and see if you can pick it up. The winning suggestion is another one of Kiwi‘s, seconded by TreehuggerThe Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. Watson’s grabbed it already; it’s one of his favourites.

The good, but slightly sad, news is that you’ve now made all the decisions needed for us to finish the final episode of The Lost Book. Instead of a story poll, I’ve resurrected our character popularity survey. Who’s your favourite character? Vote now in the sidebar poll to the right.

Two decisions taken: Otto works at the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne (thanks Anna for the suggestion and, I guess, Des the curator for giving Otto a job!) and Professor Remi is going on an expedition to the central Rift Valley (good work TheLetterB, Lulu and Tom). Ta, everyone, for your votes.

Kyle at the bar in the Sheep Heid

Two decisions still to go. First, the important question of drinks. What are Aileen and Kyle’s tipples? Here’s the shorlist, chosen by me from your suggestions:

1. Guiness for her, G&T for him (cheers Caroline)
2. Dr Johnson’s Definitive Ale for her, Guinness and black for him (sláinte DJ and Kiwi)
3. Dr Johnson’s for her, The Original Oldbury Sheep Dip whisky for him (skál DJ and Treehugger)
4. Pint of Deuchars IPA each, Rebus-style (na zdrowie DJ)
5. Share a jug of Pimms (cin cin Kiwi)

There’s a poll in the sidebar to the right. Vote now!

Watson reading

Finally, we need a book for Watson and Aileen to read in the Sheep Heid. There have been some great suggestions, but here are my favourite four:

1. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell (Siobhan)
2. Hound of the Baskervilles (Kiwi, seconded by Treehugger)
3. The Lost Art of Keeping Secrets by Eva Rice (Nu-knees)
4. The Lost World by Michael Crichton (Treehugger)

Episode 6 storyboard sketches

We need your help in finalising a few details for episode 6. You can still vote for which library Otto will be working in – the poll’s in the sidebar to the right. Also in the sidebar is another poll, so vote now to decide on Professor Catherine Remi’s new job/adventure from the following suggestions:

1. Teaching scuba diving (ta Kiwi)

2. An expedition to the central Rift Valley (good collaboration between TheLetterB and Lulu, with a bit of input from Tom)

3. Research into higher levels of conciousness (thanks Wearealldoomed)

You can also still help us with a book recommendation if you know the password from The Lost World.

Finally, we need some new suggestions from you! Kyle’s getting in the drinks at the Sheep Heid Inn – but what’s his poison? Tell us what you think Kyle and Aileen’s favourite drinks would be by leaving us a comment (by the way, stereotyped suggestions involving a pint for Kyle and “a glass of white wine for the lady” are not going to win!).

Screen captures - animating Otto in the library

I’m in the middle of animating Otto’s library scene for episode 6. There have been two suggestions for which library he works in – Anna suggests the State Library of Victoria in Melbourne (aparently they have a great rare books collection and curator Des might give Otto a job), and ResQgeek suggests the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Which library do you prefer? Vote now in the sidebar poll to the right.

(Oh, and also in this scene we have incorporated Kiwi‘s punning suggestion of invisible ink, modified by Bibliomane‘s security ink idea, into the storyboards.)

If you’d like to make a story suggestion, Professor Catherine Remi needs a new challenge – she’ll feature on a magazine cover! Also, if you know the password from The Lost World you can help us with a book recommendation.

We have a winning location for Kyle and Aileen’s first date: the Sheep Heid Inn (54% of the vote). Congrats Bibliomane on a popular suggestion! Thanks for all your votes, especially if you’ve come over from the Sheep Heid’s page on Facebook – welcome to The Lost Book!

The good news (for me!) is that I get to go on a reconnaissance mission to the Sheep Heid this lunchtime. I don’t think the budget would have stretched to London, let alone Madagasgar!

Otto DaféProfessor Catherine RemiTwo of our characters still need careers advice. Otto’s looking for the perfect library to work in – any ideas? And, Professor Catherine Remi needs a new challenge.

And, and if you know the password from The Lost World you can help us with a book recommendation!

Right, I’m off to lunch – back this afternoon to finish off the storyboards.

1. An adventure in Madagascar – where Wearealldoomed has heard rumors of other Ikhata-like happenings.

2. Cinema followed by cupcakes – Caroline’s “baby steps of perfection” suggestion.

3. The Natural History Museum in London – Kiwi‘s idea, because of the dinosaur skeleton, seconded by Wearealldoomed.

4. A perfect picnic on Salisbury Crags – another idea from Kiwi, seconded by Watson and Bibliomane.

5. The Sheep Heid Inn in Duddingston – perhaps for a game of skittles? – Bibliomane‘s plan for the evening after the picnic.

Vote now in the sidebar poll for your top choice!

And, here’s a double question for you. First, which library should Otto get a job in? (Perhaps one with a particularly valuable book that he could keep an eye on while he’s there?) Second, does anyone have any suggestions for particularly pertinent books that he could stamp?! (Real or fictional.) Leave us a comment with your ideas…

Aileen and Kyle talking on the phone

At the moment, the story with the most votes is Meg‘s suggestion that Kyle asks Aileen out. You’re clearly a bunch of romantics! We know that Aileen has a secret soft spot for Kyle so there’s a reasonable chance she might say yes.

So – where would Kyle take Aileen on their first date? Give us your suggestion by leaving a comment, please!

Thanks, everyone, for voting to decide what Beryl Potts’s evil plan is. The winning plot is Wearealldoomed‘s idea that Beryl will make rejuvenation available to a select group of the international elite – making Beryl rich and “creating a new class of high society, superior in looks and wealth”.

Well done, Wearealldoomed, and thanks everyone else who suggested ideas – the vote was very tight, with Tom’s profit-making plan only just beaten into second place (29% to 26%).

Aileen and WatsonYou’ve decided who will narrate episode 6: Aileen (39%) and Watson (50%)!

Next up, we need to work out which stories we want to tell in episode 6. The episode will show a series of short sequences with a voiceover narration to tell several stories very quickly. This means we can tie up quite a few loose ends, or show what happens next to several of the characters.

Here are the first few suggestions for stories that could be included:

• Otto stealing the book from the National Library of Scotland.

• Watson attacking Kyle (by Kiwi)

• Aileen joins Invisible Inc. (suggested by Tom)

• Kyle asks Aileen out (ta Meg)

• Aileen’s article about these events (thanks Meg and Kiwi)

• Prof Remi and the Ikhata in Venezuela (cheers Brian)

We need some more ideas! Leave us a comment to tell us which stories/explanations you’d like to see in episode 6. When we have all your ideas, we’ll have a vote to choose everyone’s favourites.

Thanks to everyone who’s joined the discussion about Beryl Potts’s evil plan. We have 6 suggestions.

Beryl plans to…

1. make a huge profit by having a monopoly on rejuvenation (suggested by Tom back in April).

2. cure her own illness (suggested by Anna who was way ahead of the rest of us in February).

3. rejuvenate herself (suggested by Tom) because she’s “a rich old lonely woman trying to regain her youth” (added by Kiwi) and perhaps wants a guy (added by Bibliomane).

4. create an army of Beryl Potts clones and use them to take over corporations across the world (suggested by Percival and seconded by Lulu).

5. create a “new class of high society, superior in looks and wealth” by selling the rejuvenation secretly to a select group of the international elite (suggested by Wearealldoomed and elaborated on by Bibliomane and Kiwi).

6. create clones of Professor Remi and use them as evil secret agents (suggested by Kiwi, bouncing off some of the other ideas).

Which do you like best? Vote now in the sidebar poll to the right, and the winner will be incorporated into The Lost Book animation.

Characters: Aileen Adler, Lyn, Prof. Remi, Watson, Kyle and Otto

It’s been decided that episode 6 will use a voiceover narration to tell the story of what happens next (we held a vote and 67% voted for this).

We need to decide which characters will be the narrators. For more information about the characters, look at the Cast and Story page. Rather than sticking to a single narrator, let’s have one female and one male character – it’d be a shame if one of our brilliant voice actors had nothing to do!

So, we’ve put two polls in the sidebar on the right. We’ve included everyone – even baddie Beryl Potts (her viewpoint might be interesting!), Watson the dog (an internal monologue as he can’t speak), and Voiceover Man (he’s been showing flashes of personality).

Who would you like to narrate the final episode of The Lost Book? Vote now!

Confrontation or reflection? Wednesday, 17 June 2009

Aileen's Daily Gazette press passRight, that’s another couple of loose ends tied up. You’ve decided that Invisible Inc. lured Aileen to Christchurch because they needed a press witness (56% of the vote – it was close!). You’ve also concluded that Kyle isn’t a police contact for Invisible Inc. (67%).

The next decision is a biggie. Episode 5 is being launched on Friday – and then there’s only one more episode to go. We need to decide how much we want to cover in the final installment. Do we want to stick to solving the crime and confronting the evil Beryl Potts? Or, do we want to explain more of the loose ends and/or find out what happens when Aileen gets back to Edinburgh? We could do either, by using different narrative structures. The options are:

1. Episode 6 uses the same linear narrative as episodes 1-5. We finish the story from where we left off, and show what happens when Beryl Potts is confronted.

2. We fast-forward six months. The episode is based around a voiceover narration where one of the characters reflects on what has happened since the night-time rescue in Christchurch. The visuals would show snippets of the events as they’re mentioned.

Although option 2 is a bit of a cheat (using a voiceover to explain things rather than showing them through action is always cheating!) it’s true to the spirit of Arthur Conan Doyle, who inspired The Lost Book. The Sherlock Holmes stories generally end with Holmes explaining everything to Watson after it’s all over.

Let us have your opinion by voting in the sidebar poll to the right. And, if you’d like to tell us what you think about either of these options, or find out what others are saying, then join the ongoing conversation.

Loose ends Wednesday, 10 June 2009

We’re tying up all sorts of loose ends in the story.

It’s been decided that Otto Dafé didn’t pass the manuscript of the Challenger journal on to Beryl Potts – he gave her an amended copy (69% of the vote). This means the original is safe somewhere.

There’s been lots of discussion about the implications of Otto and Lyn working together. Lyn has lured Aileen to Christchurch on the pretext of chasing Otto – who she knew all along was a good guy. So, what is she up to? The current theory is that Lyn needs a journalist to be present – either to make sure that Grazp’s activities are reported in the press (my idea, seconded by Kiwi) or because she thinks a journalist will be able to help them find things out (Tom’s suggestion).

What do you think? Did Lyn want Aileen as a press witness, or for her investigative skills? Vote now in the poll to the right.

And, another question: Tom suggests that Kyle might be Invisible Inc.’s police contact. He suggests that Aileen wasn’t actually a suspect, but Kyle told her that to get her involved because Invisible Inc. wanted her.

So, is Kyle also in on the conspiracy? Does everyone except Aileen and Watson know what’s going on?! Vote in the sidebar poll.

Clues: Watson's sniffed the book, Lyn may have read the journal, KBE left at the crime scene

We’ve also been chatting about Aileen’s Mum, and whether she was also in on the plan, whether she was framed (or being used to get at Aileen), or whether she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. The conclusion is that she was just unlucky – and clumsy! As Bibliomane puts it: “She sounded EXACTLY the sort of person who would do that and Aileen was clearly only too familiar with Mum getting fired – maybe she just always messes up.”

All of this conversation about loose ends has got us thinking about how we approach the final episode of The Lost Book. Here are two options:

1. We finish the story from where we left off, and show what happens when Beryl Potts is confronted.

2. We cheat slightly and fast-forward six months. The episode is based around a voiceover narration where one of the characters reflects on what has happened since the night-time rescue in Christchurch. The visuals would show snippets of the events (Beryl being driven off in a police van, Aileen being re-united with her mother, etc. etc.) . We’d be able to tie up far more loose ends this way.

What do you think? We’d like to have your opinion, so leave us a comment.

Time for something new to vote on.

You’ve decided that Lyn and Otto will wear ninja disguises for their night-time rescue of Aileen (62%).

There also seems to be a consensus that it was Otto who stole the original manuscript from the National Library of Scotland at the beginning of episode 1 (thanks, Lulu, Kiwi and Tom).

The new question is: did Otto deliver the original manuscript to Beryl Potts? Or, did he hide the original and give her an amended copy? Vote now in the sidebar poll to the right, and join the discussion.

Episode 5 – draft outline Friday, 29 May 2009

Hello! Episode 5 is coming together nicely. The latest decisions are: Lyn and Otto are siblings, they’ve been secretly working together from the start – and they’re both good! (38%); and Lyn and Otto will rescue Aileen together (36% each).

We’re still taking votes on how old Professor Remi looks, so let us have your opinion asap.

I’ve started to put together an outline for the episode. It’s all quite exciting! We need to begin with Otto escaping. Beryl Potts of Grazp shot at him and missed at the end of episode 4. So: let’s have him hiding in a store cupboard while his pursuers run past.

Later that night someone abseils down the Grazp building.

Cut to Aileen and Remi, held captive. I see them roped together, sitting down (remember that bit in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade where Harrison Ford and Sean Connery have been captured by the Nazis?). They can quickly compare notes – working out enough between them to justify the arrest of Beryl Potts. Remi will reveal that the rejuvenation process doesn’t work without the Ikhata. She’s about to say where the Ikhata is when…

… a screw hits the ground and bounces.

Looking up, the remaining fixings for a ventilation grille are being unscrewed from the inside. Eventually, the grille is lifted aside to reveal…

Otto Dafé!

Aileen reacts with anger, but Otto shushes her. He’s about to explain when…

Lyn (as her secret-society alter-ego Lynx) crashes through the window. We get a rescue and a family reunion in one! The episode ends with them about to climb a rope ladder to a helicopter, and we see the helicopter flying off during the end credits.

The end

What do you think? Comments welcome, as usual. We need to get the script finalised by Sunday afternoon as that’s the only time we can arrange a recording session with voice actors Cora Bissett and Sean Biggerstaff. So, let us have your thoughts straight away!

One question – what about Watson and Kyle? We won’t have time to show what they’re up to during this episode, but if they’ve left the rescuing to Lynx they could perhaps be concentrating on finding the stolen book? We can then come back to them in the final episode…

Professor Remi – character design Thursday, 28 May 2009

Adam’s been working on the design of Professor Catherine Remi this afternoon. Remi is a noted Belgian scientist in her seventies. She was a key member of the 2004 Challenger expedition to Southern Venezuela (it’s the journal of this expedition that has been stolen by Grazp Pharmaceuticals). She’s now being held captive by Grazp, alongside Aileen.

The design is complicated, though. Remi is a septuagenarian, but while she was on the expedition she was affected by the rejuvenative properties of the water. (She was the only person affected, and Bibliomane and Kiwi have worked out the seriously inspired idea that this is because of the Ikhata – a mysterious artefact Remi possessed, which unlocked the power of the water).

Anyway, the question is… how old does Prof. Remi look now? Has she reverted to her true age? Does she appear to be a much younger woman? Or, is she a little girl?

Otto DaféLyn/LynxThe poll to decide whether Otto Dafé (book assassin and KBE agent – a bad guy) and Lyn (bookseller and member of secret society of bibliophiles Invisible Inc – a goodie) are siblings is still deadlocked at 50% “yes”, 50% “no”.

We need to finalise the story quickly and get working on the script and storyboards. So, here are a few more options, based on recent discussions, to try and get a decision:

1. Lyn is trying to extract Otto from the KBE so that they can team up (Kiwi‘s original idea.)

2. Lyn and Otto are both working for KBE. They’re pretending not to know each other so they can stay undercover, but it will turn out that Lyn’s also a baddie. (A great idea from Bookaddictus.)

3. Lyn and Otto are both working for Invisible Inc. They’re pretending not to know each other so they can stay undercover, but it will turn out that Otto’s also a goodie. (A lovely inversion from Lulu.)

4. Lyn and Otto are not related.

Vote now!

You can also keep voting to decide who is going to rescue Aileen. (Options are: Watson, Otto – having changed sides, or Lyn – transformed into her secret-society alter-ego Lynx, in an all-action rescue involving a helicopter).
