The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is recognised as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world and one of Scotland’s foremost cultural ambassadors. Formed in 1974 with a commitment to serve the Scottish community, the Orchestra performs throughout Scotland, as well as around the UK and abroad. Consisting of 37 players, the SCO plays a wide range of classical music, from Baroque, through Classical and Romantic to works from the 20th and 21st centuries.
The Orchestra also offers a unique programme of education projects for both children and adults, ranging from Scrapers and Tooters – a music-making weekend for amateur orchestral musicians – to projects with community groups and school pupils. Find out more about the Orchestra at www.sco.org.uk or sign up for the SCO e-newsletter for regular updates about concerts, events, recordings and broadcasts.

Soundtrack Competition
The Lost Book soundtrack competition, run by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, asked composers of all ages to submit their own soundtrack for episode one of The Lost Book. The winners were mike_bohn in the adult category and cobra151 in the 16-18 age group. SPegg was also “highly commended” in the adult category.
Congratulations to the winners, thanks to our judges Mick Cooke, of Belle and Sebastian and Alexis Bennett, and thanks to all the entrants. Links to all the entries are on the soundtrack competition page.
Catch up with the SCO on tour!
After a whirlwind tour of India, the SCO played a few concerts in Scotland in March 2009 before heading to Eastern Europe on 22 March. Resident blogger, Sub-Principal Second Violin Rosenna East, brought us all the orchestra news from Bydgoszcz, Krakow, Budapest and Istanbul. Next up was the Highlands Tour in June, and the Strings tour and the Wind and Brass tour in July and the Edinburgh Festival and BBC Proms in August. Get all the latest at SCO on tour.
Disc of the Year 2009
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s recording of Mozart’s last four symphonies, with Sir Charles Mackerras, has scooped two prestigious BBC Awards.
The double-disc has won the Orchestral category in the BBC Music Awards 2009 (voted for by the public), as well as Disc of the Year, as voted for by the critics.
The recording of Symphonies 38-41 has received rave reviews since its release on Linn Records in February 2008.
Update, May 2009: another prize for this recording – Sir Charles Mackerras won the Critics’ Award at the 2009 Classical BRIT Awards.
