The characters of Sally Challenger and her team were created by bestselling novelist Jasper Fforde especially for The Lost Book.
Sally Challenger is a real heroine: an explorer who has reached both poles and climbed five of the world’s highest peaks; and a renowned archaeologist. She is also the great-great grand daughter of Professor Challenger, whose adventures in “The Lost World” were published as fiction “to discourage return visits”.
Howard F. Monroe is an American financier and adventurer. He’s the money behind the trip, with his only condition being that he was part of the expedition. He and Dr Ottero disappeared in the night – leaving behind their shed skins. Sally believes that two friendly Dimorphodon might be Monroe and Ottero in a new form.
Professor Catherine Remi is a noted Belgian scientist in her seventies. She has been captured by Grazp Pharmaceuticals.
Dr Marisa Ottero is an internationally renowned archaeologist from the University of Venezuela who knows the Amazon area well. Her fate is the same as that of Howard F. Monroe.
The team’s pilot is Major Ramón Pedilla, ex-Venezuelan air force and ex-boyfriend of Sally Challenger. He abandoned the expedition, but has since been discoved near the temple – probably insane.
Captain Miles Carstairs of the British Army was also a team member, but he was found dead on day eight.
Also in the Gran Sabana was another expedition group headed by Grazp Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and led by Angus McFaddyen, one of Sally Challenger’s harshest critics. They have left, with their captive Professor Remi and as much water as they could carry.
