Jasper Fforde has written two fictional newspaper articles about the expedition. The quick summary is:
Sally Challenger’s expedition travelled to the Gran Sabana area of Southern Venezuela in May 2004. Their intentions were secret, but rumours and speculation abound. It’s believed that Sally found her great-great grandfather, Professor Challenger’s, unpublished journals in 2002. Speculation about the contents of these journals includes rumours of a “Black Crystal” with healing powers and a “fire in the sky” over the region in 1892.
On 7th June 2004 it was reported that contact with the expedition had been lost after two initial radio messages. It was also reported that a second expedition, headed by Grazp Pharmaceuticals Inc. had entered the area.
On 10th April 2006 the expedition journal was read at the Central Criminal Court in London. Its contents were not revealed in the press, but a source described it as: “Fantastic stuff. A tale of ancient legend, modern greed and good old-fashioned adventure.”
