The Lost Book ran from January to July 2009 and was a collaborative adventure in storytelling. It took place right here on the world wide web and was open to anyone in the known world to join in (we don’t think anyone tuned in from an unknown or lost world!). There were lots of ways of getting involved and thousands of you did.
Whodunit? You told us!
You contributed your ideas to the web series. You wrote the story and solved the mystery of the missing book. You created new characters and decided what they’d do. By working together, you plotted the entire series. Well done!
If you want to find out how everyone collaborated to develop the story of each episode, and who was involved with each, take a look at the blog posts:

Thumbs up!
You decided which story ideas got the green light by voting in our polls. Do you know how many decisions you made? Watson the dog kept track by listing each decision on his facts page: there are 52 of them. You decided everything from Watson’s name to baddie Beryl Potts’s evil plan. Sweet!
Collaborative book writing – we reached the end
We managed to write the stolen book – the journal of Sally Challenger’s 2004 expedition to Arthur Conan Doyle’s lost world – collaboratively.
Guest writer Jasper Fforde started the story by creating the characters and situation in his fictional newspaper articles, but it was you, the visitors to this website, who wrote the book. Well done, all of you, and thanks to everyone who took part. Read the journal to find out all about Sally Challenger’s expedition.
Soundtrack competition – final scores!
The Lost Book soundtrack competition, run by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, asked composers of all ages to submit their own soundtrack for episode one of The Lost Book. The winners were mike_bohn in the adult category and cobra151 in the 16-18 age group. SPegg was also “highly commended” in the adult category.
Congratulations to the winners, thanks to our judges Mick Cooke, of Belle and Sebastian and Alexis Bennett, and thanks to all the entrants. Links to all the entries are on the soundtrack competition page.
Cupcake competition – it’s been baked!
Our cupcake competition ran during March 2009. The winning cupcake, created by the talented acupcakery, featured in Episode 3 of The Lost Book.

You can download our special free bookplates to label your BookCrossing book.
Calling all budding film makers – make your own animation
Produce your own animation and soundtrack using our downloadable workshop resources, designed for 8 to 13 year-olds. Bring Aileen Adler and Watson to life in your own stories. Don’t forget to upload your finished films to a video hosting site and let us have the link so that everyone can watch your work!
