Cupcakes are ready to go Tuesday, 7 April 2009

Our competition-winning cupcakes are finished! We’ve taken the computer models and added textures. It was remarkably straightforward – we needed a texture map for the “R.I.P.” on the gravestone, but everything else is a simple solid colour.
Both cupcakes are going in the animation – the winning cake (left) by acupcakery will be given to Aileen, while Lyn will have LittleMissCupcakeParis‘s running-up cupcake.

We’ve made the computer models of our competition-winning cupcakes. On the left is acupcakery‘s winning cake, and to the right is the runner up by LittleMissCupcakeParis.

Making the models was fun. We started with a perfectly regular shape for the case (a cross between a many-pointed star and a truncated cone), and a dome for the top of the cake. Then these were pulled around to give them some imperfections and to make the icing (frosting).
The grass and sprinkles were both done by “scattering” objects – we made one grass blade (or star or sugar strand) and highlighted the surfaces they needed to be placed on. The system then strews them randomly across the top of the cake. It’s not that different from putting sprinkles on a real cupcake, and a lot easier than piping grass!
The tombstone and wizard’s hat were relatively straightforward to model (a line bevel-extruded and a lathe object respectively, if you’re interested in such things. You’re not? I can’t think why). The hand… well, actually, we used Kyle’s hand. We took a copy of Kyle (sorry Kyle), cut his hand off, and shrunk it down.
The next stage is to add “textures” to get the cupcakes looking good enough to eat.

We have a cupcake winner – and it’s acupcakery!
Our judges were Sam and Jemma from London cupcake specialists Crumbs and Doilies. They say: “We love the thought that’s gone into it and the effort that’s gone into making the grass, headstone and hand – a terrifyingly terrific cupcake!”
Congratulations, acupcakery! We’ll be making a virtual cupcake based on your design, and it’ll feature in episode 3 of The Lost Book.
We’ve also chosen a second-placed cupcake: the Christchurch Wizard cake by LittleMissCupcakeParis. Sam and Jemma say: “we love the use of elements of the story that LittleMissCupcakeParis’s used and echoed in the decoration, and we had great fun finding out about the Christchurch Wizard.” So, congratulations LittleMissCupcakeParis! We’re going to try to get both cupcakes into episode 3.
Thanks to everyone who took part, and special thanks to Sam, Jemma and Crumbs and Doilies. Did you know, Crumbs and Doilies now have a facebook group you can join? And, you can see their amazing cupcakes on their blog or flickr photostream. And, don’t forget you can win free cupcakes in their cupcake-naming competition! That’s free cupcakes!

Cupcake competition – magic bones Sunday, 29 March 2009

Aren’t these cupcakes amazing?! The latest entries in our cupcake competition come from Little Miss Cupcake Paris. A lot of thought has gone into them, as well as a lot of creativity and skill.
The bone cupcake is for Watson, “to give him energy to track those bad guys like Otto, the KBE Agent”. The flower cupcake symbolises Aileen’s next destination, Christchurch, NZ, which is known as the garden city. And, the amazing wizard hat cupcake refers to the Christchurch wizard – a local celebrity (and perhaps someone who could help Aileen?!). Even its sprinkles are significant – they represent the flags of the UK and New Zealand.
Do you think you can do better? (Quite a challenge!) If so, enter our competition! Upload a photo of your Lost Book inspired cupcake to our Flickr group. The closing date is this Tuesday, 31 March 2009. The winning cupcake will be included in the animation.

Here’s the latest entry to The Lost Book’s cupcake competition. acupcakery was aiming for intrigue and has certainly succeeded. Does it show Carstairs rising from the grave? Is it the ghost of books assassinated by the KBE? Who knows?! I’m sure Aileen would enjoy eating it!
If you’d like to enter the competition, bake a cupcake inspired by The Lost Book and upload a photo of it to our Flickr group. The closing date is next Tuesday, 31 March 2009.
The winning cupcake will be included in the animation.
