Where can Aileen get help? Friday, 6 February 2009
Posted by The Lost Book in Story teamwork.trackback
We still need your help to write episode 2 of The Lost Book. First, watch episode 1. And, take a look at Jasper Fforde’s articles: the book that has been stolen is the expedition journal of Sally Challenger.
You’ve decided a lot of things this week. We know that Watson’s a boy – but we don’t yet know if he’s a criminal spydog or a loyal friend, so vote now in the sidebar poll. We’ve discovered that Aileen has a soft spot for Kyle, which is good news for him, but we’ve also decided that he’s going to get suspended when his boss finds out he’s been helping Aileen, which isn’t so good.
Aileen needs to find out what “K.B.E.” stands for. Anna had a brilliant idea:
“B” could stand for “bibliophile” or “bibliomaniac”. Aileen should ask some bibliophiles (the Alcuin Society?) if they know of any biblioclasts.
The Alcuin Society is a real association of bibliophiles in Vancouver. What we need is a fictional society – perhaps a secret society? – who protect books. They’re sure to know what K.B.E. stands for, and they’re certain to help Aileen! So, can you suggest a name for this fictional book-loving society, plus the city where Aileen will find it? You might also want to tell us a little about your society…

How about a Babel Society (after Jorge Luis Borges’s library)? They’d be based in Buenos Aires.
Gosh, I’m impressed. Here I was still thinking about Aileen and her feelings toward Kyle — but you are much, much faster than I anticipated!
Initially, I would have thought of a “Alexandrian Bibliophilic Concilium” (based in Alexandria, founded in 48BC), but I like Donald’s idea better.
It not only has literary connotations, there is also an abundance of “B”s! (Babel, Borges, Buenos Aires, KBE: I wonder if we can make that to a recurring theme…)
Oh, Argentina and Venezuela are in South America! I think that’s a good starting point.
We’ve enlisted the help of the BookCrossing forum – who better than a community of book lovers to suggest ideas for a bibliophilic society?!
Or, do you think you can invent the best secret society? Leave us a message!
Here are the ideas from BookCrossing:
Invisible Inc.? Inc/Ink – geddit? ;) — posted by libertine101.
The Alexandrian Bibliophilic Concilium could be referred to as ABC when in front of non-members — posted by KitsuneCharmed and otakuu.
The Bibuliberati Wine Society — posted by miketroll, who says “There are interesting classical associations (perhaps coincidental) between books and drinking. ‘Liber’ in Latin means ‘book’, but is also the name of an ancient Italian god of wine and drinking. The English adjective ‘bibulous’ has its root in the Latin ‘bibere’ (to drink), and ‘Biblos’ is Greek for ‘book’. The secret bibliophile society can hide itself in its cups!”
Thanks, everyone! We’ve taken your suggestions and put them to the vote – make your opinion heard in the sidebar poll to the right.
