Hello. This week is composing week, and yesterday I started writing my music for The Lost Book. To help me along the way I have a copy of the film, the screenplay (the script) and a storyboard (like the script but in the form of a cartoon strip). I also have my various musical instruments, some pencils and paper and my computer, which contains all kinds of useful software. ….and the most important bit of kit, the KETTLE for making strong cups of tea. I think I have pretty much settled on my instrumentation but I’m not going to tell you yet in case it changes dramatically. Some photos have been requested, so these may get sent in the direction of this blog soon.

The important part of the process at this early stage is settling on a style, a mood, a general musical feeling. This is often a case of figuring out what isn’t right as much as what is right for the film. This can take up just as much time as writing the music itself. More tea….
