Building a snowdog, December 2008
OK – the dog plays an important part in The Lost Book. Not only can the dog communicate with Aileen, it can pick up clues that humans can’t because of its extraordinary sense of smell. Not only the scent of aftershave (or is it perfume?) but the smell from a scarf (wood smoke or soot) and the actual smell of the thief’s fingerprints. (Is that the whiff of Thai chilli crisps? Or is it cheese and onion?) But we need a name for the dog. Even though it is Aileen’s best friend she can’t decide on the perfect name! So, can you help? Please give us your suggestions straight away and we’ll go with the name that makes the dog leap into action!

16 January 2009: comments are now closed. Thank you for all your suggestions! We’ll pass them to our special guest judge – come back later to vote on the shortlist.

Leanne likes doofer after a very naughty but clever spaniel!

Good luck with the launch guys!

17. Jim - Wednesday, 7 January 2009

Cromarty – good Scottish name. Has a detective story feel about it?

Nazal?! For obvious reasons!

20. P4B - Friday, 9 January 2009

Suggestions from P4B!

Walkers – because he’s obviously a crisp expert.
Bat – because of his amazing sense of smell (not sure if they have an amazing sense of smell!).
Blood Hound – for the same reason
James Dog – a dog version of James Bond, he always gets the baddies.
Buster – because he’s a crime buster
Ostrich – because ostriches can run fast and the have a good sense of smell!
Alfie – because we liked it!
Sleuth – for obvious reasons

21. GirlnBlue - Friday, 9 January 2009

AXEL, which stands for father of peace, trustworthy and dependable. I think it’s brilliant! What do you reckon? ^^

22. Uma - Friday, 9 January 2009

I second Watson. It’s an obvious choice.

23. Chad - Friday, 9 January 2009

He should be Scooby!

24. wikket - Friday, 9 January 2009

Leo, simple, reminds one of a brave lion, it rolls off the tongue, and it could be short for some cool made up name like leoruffreus lol

Argos!
Honoring both Jason and the Argonauts, and Odysseus’ faithful companion

I think that the dog needs a nice sensible name…Like Maggie
Looking forward to this project…

27. John - Saturday, 10 January 2009

BOUNDER. This is an excellent dog name, with long roots in my personal history. With many layers of meaning this name can do SO MUCH for your character- plus it is an action word! What more could you want.

28. Doreen - Saturday, 10 January 2009

Scratch: how he sniffs, his favorite thing to receive.

And to go over ten words: a hint as to how he got his powers?

29. Nina (age 6) - Saturday, 10 January 2009

Toby – because it’s a nice name

30. Sonnrain - Saturday, 10 January 2009

Iona – she wears pink and is obviously a Scottish girl.

31. Rick - Saturday, 10 January 2009

After loking over the submissions…I think Watson is the best choice. Good lick with the launch! Cant wait to read it.

32. anna - Saturday, 10 January 2009

I like Poe–in honor of his b-day, sensitive, poetice, and full of the need to belong and to be loved.

33. Nicholas - Saturday, 10 January 2009

50 Scent – it’s current, it describes his role, and it’s a good pun.

34. Geri Dosalua - Sunday, 11 January 2009

Galileo -sounds official and scientific.

35. Anonymous - Sunday, 11 January 2009

Gaiden. Sounds like ‘guiding’ — (Aileen is also the main female in Ninja Gaiden.)

36. Jamillah - Sunday, 11 January 2009

I like Juanita, Noor, or some other ethnic name. After all, she seems to look like a dog of color. Why do all dog heroine need Eurocentric names?

37. conchita - Sunday, 11 January 2009

Toby would do, ’cause that is the name i’ve given my dog. i like it, it’s a typical dog’s name

38. Basilisa - Sunday, 11 January 2009

I think it would be more original to call him Crick (after Francis Crick, the one who discovered DNA structure together with Watson). You see, there are more Watsons appart from Sherlock Holmes’. ;-)

39. Lucas - Sunday, 11 January 2009

Spot – Not only does he have a spot (well, two in the picture), he also “spots” out clues.

40. Roldao Silva - Sunday, 11 January 2009

Nosy sounds good for a dog with such a sense of smell, which, I imagine, is important for the story. It must be curious too and … nosy.

41. Katie - Monday, 12 January 2009

Mr. Marple (detective + his eyes look like marbles)

42. Vivie - Monday, 12 January 2009

Shadow – Because he doesn’t want to be seen!

43. Adrian - Monday, 12 January 2009

Got to be called The Beagle if Darwin has anything to do with it.

44. ASW - Monday, 12 January 2009

Flash – because it’s a bit superhero, ungendered and the dog looks like a ‘flash’.
I also like Watson, Crick, Poe and Spot.

45. Pratik - Monday, 12 January 2009

Mr. White. Since, its a snow dog, it seems so sensible to name it so..

46. Gary Godfrey - Monday, 12 January 2009

My name is “Reader”.
That’s what this is all about . . .

47. Jen. - Monday, 12 January 2009

Harvey!!

48. Seth - Monday, 12 January 2009

Layna – Greek for light/truth, which she will find/seek.

49. Jules - Monday, 12 January 2009

I immediately thought of Bonzo but in my family the type of bull terrier this looks like has always been known as a Belinda dog after my Great Gran’s dog in India so if you should decide it’s female then that’d be my choice.

Jamie likes Little Woof (cos he’s a small Barker like him…) or Eddie as the dog is from Edinburgh and Katie thought Runnie because dogs like running or Greyie because he’s grey (4 yr old logic for you)

50. Caribou - Monday, 12 January 2009

Mimzie – a rather magical ethereal pooch. Light and spiritual in a way that’s not of this earth. Hummmm ……… what is this pooch capable of?

51. Sue - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Schnozzle – slang for nose, for which he seems adept at using

52. Dave - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

I’m honoured to offer my name too, but agree with the others that he should be called Watson. (Why fight it?)

53. Anonymous - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Eddie

54. Ruth - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Charlie

55. purple widow - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Comet

56. Jackie - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Olive! It’s something about those black, shiny eyes…

57. Jeff - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

Latke – Delicious Jewish treat during Hanukkah (winter time frame)

58. Joy Wandrey - Tuesday, 13 January 2009

The dog’s name should be Jango. It’s short, catchy and easy to remember. It also has no specific meaning, so can mean anything you want it to.

59. Evan - Wednesday, 14 January 2009

Neptune, and I think Watson works also.

60. Kristin - Wednesday, 14 January 2009

How about Durante, the Schnozolla?

61. Parny - Wednesday, 14 January 2009

Zortan.
Because it’s got a ‘z’ in it.

Geoffrey.

63. Parny - Wednesday, 14 January 2009

Gus is the go for this dog- a clever, strong friend for Aileen.
Good luck with the project.

66. Nicola and Anna - Wednesday, 14 January 2009

In our house we’ve come up with a few suggestions:
Sense – because he uses all his senses for investigating
Scent – because he can smell lots of things
Parker (as in nosey parker)
Rhona – another nice Scottish name, similar to Iona, which I also like
Spike – no particular reason – I just like the name!
Speedy – because he is fast!

Good luck with the project!

67. Sierra - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Pavlov or Bex

68. Sierra - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Oops, forgot the reasons: Pavlov, because it’s got a sciencey dog reference, and I’ve always wanted to name a dog Pavlov; Bex, because its short, catchy, works for either gender and a character in a book I really liked.

69. Monty Tucker - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Monty says “Diggy” the dog !

70. Anna - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Watson, for a nice detective link?

71. David i Janet Adams, Helen, Przem, Sara i Hannah Chmielowiec - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Paws, because he looks so thoughtful (Pause for thought – sic!)

72. Asha - Thursday, 15 January 2009

Douglas, I like it because it reminds me of squashed faces.
Tiggles because I just came up with it.
Lert, because he’s alert.

73. Becky Stiles - Friday, 16 January 2009

Zero because it reminds me of the dog in the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas!
